MASTERING SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINE: FASTING

KEY TEXT: Matthew 17:21 (NKJV) "However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."

BACKGROUND AND THOUGHTS ON THE TEXT

Fasting is a crucial discipline for any believer who desires to navigate the spiritual realm effectively. Fasting does not change God; rather, it changes you by humbling the flesh, quieting natural distractions, and sharpening spiritual sensitivity.

In Matthew 17, the disciples failed to cast out a stubborn demon because of their spiritual insensitivity and unbelief. Jesus revealed that certain spiritual blockages and high-level demonic oppressions require a heightened state of spiritual power achieved through prayer and fasting.

Fasting starves the desires of the flesh so that your spirit man can gain dominance. It clears spiritual sluggishness, accelerates answers to prayer, and unlocks deeper dimensions of spiritual authority.

Incorporate regular periods of fasting into your lifestyle. As you subject your physical body to spiritual discipline, your spirit becomes light, responsive, and empowered to break stubborn strongholds.

APPLICATION

• Schedule regular periods of fasting to keep your spirit dominant over your flesh.

• Combine fasting with intense scripture study and prayer, not mere abstinence from food.

• Use fasting to seek clarity, spiritual breakthroughs, and deeper sensitivity.

• Refuse to allow physical appetites to dictate your spiritual trajectory.

• Maintain a humble, quiet attitude during seasons of consecration.

PRAYER POINTS

  1. Father, grant me the grace and stamina to embrace regular spiritual fasting.
  2. Lord, break every spiritual heaviness and sluggishness off my life.
  3. By the power of prayer and fasting, let every stubborn obstacle before me dissolve!

ACTION POINT: Plan a personal fast for the upcoming week, setting specific spiritual goals and prayer targets for the fast.
