KEY TEXT: Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”
BACKGROUND AND THOUGHTS ON THE TEXT
Parenting is an integral aspect of the family system. In so many parts of the world, one of the laid down prerequisites of a successful family unit is not just having children but adequately parenting them. Successful parenting is transforming little bundles of joy into functional adults. Our children should not grow up to be empty or hollow mammals parading the earth with no direction. Instead, they should be godly, intelligent, caring, and balanced people who contribute meaningfully to the development of the society.
The very first issue to consider before having children is to ensure that you are not cursed. It is a law of life that everything reproduces after its kind. As a parent, you produce who and what you are. Parental iniquities initiate generational curses. Curses take effect when you behave in certain ways that are contrary to God’s Word. There are numerous ways in which parental curses come: they include willful and consistent sinning, involvements in demonic activities, stealing from God, etc.
APPLICATION: Cursed parents will find it difficult to bring up blessed children. The way to reverse parental curses is firstly, by repentance from all sin, and seeking ministry to break the curses and replace them with God’s blessing. It is your covenant right to have blessed children, whose blessing would transcend from one generation to another, but it’s your responsibility to bring your children up in the way of the Lord.
PRAYER: Father, I thank You for the children You have entrusted into my care. I receive grace to bring them up in the way of righteousness.
ACTION POINT: Keep modelling godliness.
