KEY TEXT: Ephesians 6:5 (NLT) “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in training and instruction of the Lord.”
BACKGROUND AND THOUGHTS ON THE TEXT
God is not looking for perfect parents, but parents with an understanding of the right priorities. Positive parenting is parenting with specific goals: having children of godly character, positive self-identity, purpose in life and a loving relationship with God. As a parent, your greatest assignment is not to provide luxury and comfort for your children, but to raise them in the precepts and fear of God. This would require spending time with them, answering their questions, defining their future, teaching them character and just loving them. Modelling good character is mandatory because you cannot effectively market what you do not model. If you must sell Christ to them, then model Christ. If you must get your children to live right, then live right!
How do you raise godly children?
- Pray intentionally and regularly for them.
- Study God’s word with them.
- Bless your children always.
- Discipline them when necessary.
- Love them unconditionally. (Children thrive on love)
- Consciously and intentionally be a part of their lives.
PRAYER: Holy Spirit, help me to set godly standards for my children.
